Right wing Nail Yakupov, who spent last season with the Colorado Avalanche after failing to live up to expectations when he was selected No. 1 overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2012 NHL Draft, is returning to Russia.

Yakupov signed a one-year contract with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL on Tuesday, according to the league’s Twitter feed.

Yakupov, the third of three consecutive No. 1 overall selections by Edmonton, spent four years with the Oilers and one year with the St. Louis Blues before playing 58 games for the Avalanche.

Yakupov registered 16 points on nine goals and seven assists with Colorado, but didn’t dress for the team’s six postseason games.

As a rookie, he finished fifth in the voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy. He tallied 31 points on 17 goals and 14 assists in 48 games, a season shortened by an NHL work stoppage. In four seasons with the Oilers, he scored 50 goals and added 61 assists.

Yakupov played in 22 games with HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL during the 2012-13 season.
