Sandal season is here, but summer footwear can easily cross the line from stylish to too sporty

Although I consider myself a maximalist, I recognize that often, a good shoe investment depends on the sartorial philosophy that “less is more.” While sandals might not seem like a priority compared to winter boots in a Canadian closet, a proper pair of sharp, foot-freeing shoes will make getting dressed up much more enjoyable in warmer months. Margaret Howell, the London-based designer known for her sharp, fuss-free, but still novel men’s wear, sent models in her spring/summer 2018 show down the runway in unassuming, but effective leather sandals. Just strappy and sensible enough. Howell showcased these sandals with cool suiting, and the result was an enviable downtime/down-to-business hybrid ensemble.

Should you wish to replicate the boardwalk-meets-boardroom vibe touted by Howell, the sandals of ancient Greece have a smart crisscross design and subtle, pinstripe-ish patterning on the leather. They would also look sharp with chinos and a button-down, so you can also sport them at less formal events.

Slide sandals would be slightly harder to pull off with typical office attire, but for those who want to go above and beyond rubbery athletic sandals or more rugged options for occasions such as brunch and date night, look to styles that have chic detailing that elevates the humble silhouette. Massimo Dutti’s sandals feature a herringbone embossing and are done in a lush hue that would pair well with khakis or jeans; they possess just enough interest without being outlandish. Aldo’s gladiator-style sandals have a minimalistic appeal but still look quite natty thanks to the strappy design.

Whatever your preference for sandal style – and regardless of where you’ll be wearing them – it can’t be stressed enough that a pedicure should become part of your summer grooming routine if you’re going to show your feet. If you take the time to trim your hair, your beard and your fingernails, what’s another 45 minutes every couple of weeks to attend to what’s below your ankles too. – Odessa Paloma Parker
