The new Kusmi Tea store at CF Carrefour Laval.

For well-travelled tea lovers, it wasn’t that long ago that a trip to Paris included a mandatory stop at a Kusmi Tea boutique to stock up on colourful tins of in-house blends. Today, the 150-year-old company has three stand-alone stores in Canada, including a brand new location in the CF Carrefour Laval on Montreal’s North Shore. Painted in Kusmi’s signature orange-red hue, the new boutique is stocked with a rainbow of tins of loose leaf to explore, as well as muslin bags and accessories such as teapots, mugs and infusers.

Based in Paris since 1917, Kusmi Tea offers more than 100 varieties of tea.

What started out as a small teahouse in Saint Petersburg serving brews to the Russian tsars has since grown to a multinational brand, with 85 boutiques in 35 countries. Based in Paris since 1917, Kusmi Tea offers more than 100 varieties of tea, each of which is produced in Normandy, France. Mainly handpicked, their leaves are imported whole from countries such as China, India and Japan before being flavoured with essences such as Bourbon Madagascar vanilla or Calabria bergamot.

Some of its exclusive recipes have been in use since the company’s beginnings; Anastasia, a black-China-and-Ceylon blend inspired by the story of the Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of the Romanov dynasty’s Czar Nicholas II, was developed by founder Pavel Kousmichoff. Its wellness teas, meanwhile, have garnered a huge following thanks to celebrity endorsements by the likes of Kendall Jenner, who once claimed to start every morning with a cup of Kusmi Tea’s Detox, a blend of maté and green tea with lemongrass.
