Artists for Peace and Justice annual TIFF-time gala, Toronto

The annual gathering in support of Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) has been a philanthropic staple during the Toronto International Film Festival for the past decade. And while other fundraisers have come and gone, this one has thrived, raising an impressive $1.4-million dollars at its recent Sept. 8 gala. This adds to the more than $31-million raised by the organization since its foundation, funds that serve the poorest communities in Haiti though programs in education and health care. The event, presented by luxe Swiss watch brand Bovet, returned to the Windsor Arms Hotel, site of the original soirée. Fittingly, the night was a culmination of greatest moments. For starters, the red carpet was replaced with a “live” painted work by pop artist Peter Tunney, who encouraged guests to dip their toes in blue paint to help with the canvas creation as they did back in 2009. And after remarks by APJ chief executive Marchelle Sellers (who stepped in after the organization’s founder Paul Haggis resigned earlier this year after sexual misconduct allegations) a handful of well-known guests, including APJ board co-chairs Ben Stiller and Susan Sarandon, gala co-chairs PR pro Natasha Koifman and Zoomer Magazine editor Suzanne Boyd, rolled up their sleeves and served dinner as they did during last year’s to-do. Among those honoured were Kate and David Daniels, presented with the Canadian Changemaker Award by Birks, handed out by actor/singer Alan Cumming and actor and activist Harry Belafonte, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Launch of Globe Style Advisor magazine’s September issue, at The Globe and Mail Centre, Toronto

One day earlier, a bit further downtown and high atop The Globe and Mail Centre, a midmorning gathering took place to launch the September issue of The Globe and Mail’s Style Advisor magazine, arguably the most important issue of the year. This year’s fall issue, which hit stoops across Canada in the Sept. 7 issue of the newspaper, is a mix of the season’s best offerings, and the intimate event, which welcomed a few dozen for a breakfast overlooking the city, highlighted some of it. Chef Rob Rossi and restaurateur David Minicucci were in attendance to talk food and travel. Taking the stage as well was Randi Bergman, who contributed a style feature to the latest issue on synth-pop darling Ralph. She was joined on-stage by her subject to talk style, fashion and creative expression.
