The MAC Ball 2018, Montreal

After a couple of galas thrown in alternative spaces, including last year’s at TOHU, a complex for circus performances, the annual and always sold-out MAC Ball returned on Sept. 22 to the Montreal space that it supports: the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. For the 800 contemporary-minded art supporters who came out, it was their last chance to relish in a splashy soirée in the museum as it currently stands. “Interruption” was the theme of the night, inspired in part by the large-scale renovation of the space, led by Saucier+Perrotte Architects and GLCRM & Associés Architectes, which is set to begin next year. The maquette of the new, brighter, more welcoming institution was on display, and “light and sheerness” – two of its key elements – set the tone for the decor and captivating light and projection performances that punctuated the night. The evening culminated with a set by Loud, a Montreal-based rapper.

MOCA Pre-Opening Dinner, Toronto

A couple of nights earlier, the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA) gave a dinner on Sept. 20 for a handful of its key supporters ahead of that museum’s hotly anticipated public debut (a members' preview took place the next night, with the official opening the day after that). Those in attendance, including MOCA executive director and chief executive Heidi Reitmaier and artist Nep Sidhu, were given a sneak peek of the inaugural exhibition BELIEVE, which is spread over two of the museum’s five floors (a whopping 55,000 square feet of repurposed space) and features the work of 16 Canadian and international artists.
