beppi crosariol’s pick of the week

Beautifully packaged, with an oversized, wraparound label fastened in place by a wax seal. In part, the scroll-like sheet is a reproduction of the notarial deed of sale of six barrels of wine in 1398, which was drawn up by Ser Lapo Mazzei, a 14th-century notary in Tuscany and ancestor of the current Mazzei family. The document is believed to be the first bearing the word “Chianti” to specify what would become Tuscany’s signature wine. Fortunately, the liquid inside is worthy of such handsome packaging. Velvety and smartly balanced, this riserva has had just enough extra time in oak to add texture and savoury intrigue in the form of cedar and spice to the salted-cherry fruit. Beautiful now, it should improve with up to eight years in the cellar. Available in Ontario at the price below, alternate vintages at various prices available in British Columbia, various prices in Alberta.
