Globe Investor now provides real-time pricing for stocks trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq before 9:30 a.m. (ET) and after 4:00 p.m. (ET).
The normal trading hours for NYSE and the Nasdaq are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00. p.m. However, outside of these hours, these exchanges enter into a pre-market session that starts at 8 a.m. and a post-market session ending at 5 p.m. (ET). These extra sessions typically see limited volume compared to the regular trading session and do not allow brokers to execute simple market orders.
Pay particular attention if you use our financial tools. What you might consider an end-of day price can continue to change in our Portfolio and Watchlist tools, as well as on stock profile pages.
Prices can change substantially in the pre- or post-market if a company issues a press release, such as on earnings, or if there is other materially important news. Also be reminded that a price can make a large move, but due to small volume, this can have limited bearing on where the stock will trade at the start of the next regular trading session.
The Globe and Mail uses the real-time Last Sale BZX feed from BATS on a media license. The feed is used by many large North American media sources. BATS is an alternative market to NYSE and Nasdaq, comprising roughly 17 per cent of trading volume. This means the end-of-day price we publish can differ slightly from other sources.
All of our stock profile pages contain a section on Price Performance, which contains a button that takes users to a Price History page. The Last quote column on those pages reflects official closing prices of a security.
During regular trading hours, The Globe and Mail remains the only media source for free real-time data for every public company trading on a North American equities market.
