Pickup trucks already represent many of the bestselling vehicles in Canada. The Ford F-series has been Canada’s bestselling vehicle for the last decade, and the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra all rank within the top 10. Automakers are breathing new life into the mid-size truck segment, which was almost forgotten following the 2009 economic downturn and is currently dwarfed by full-size trucks in sales.

Ford is poised to strengthen its hold on the market with the reintroduction of the 2019 Ford Ranger after a seven-year hiatus. Jeep also launched the all-new Gladiator to considerable fanfare. In addition, even though no concrete plans have yet been released, reports suggest that Ram may also resurrect the Dakota nameplate.

New players are also stepping into the pickup ring. For example, budding automaker Rivian recently showcased its R1T pickup EV, which touts an all-electric range of up to 660 kilometres. Lesser-known startup Workhorse, is also gearing up production of its W-15 plug-in hybrid, which has already amassed thousands of orders. In addition, Hyundai’s Santa Cruz pickup concept, which the automaker featured at the North American International Auto Show a few years ago, could enter the market as early as 2020.

Meanwhile, we’ve featured some of our favourite offers this week on some of the most popular full-size pickup trucks on Canadian roads today.
