Outgoing Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says she hopes premier-designate Doug Ford changes the rules to grant the Liberals official party status.

The Liberals dropped below the eight-seat threshold in Thursday night’s election, winning only seven seats.

Being a recognized party in the legislature allows parties to access resources such as research assistance, but that threshold can be changed by legislators, as has been in the past.

Asked whether he would support such a change, Ford said he would talk to his team about the issue in the days and weeks to come.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was also pressed on the issue, and would only say that the decision was Ford’s to make.

Wynne resigned as Liberal leader last night and the party says that its focus is now on its renewal.
