Here’s some news for folks who still remember that advertising jingle: You may have to walk a lot farther for a joint.

New calculations from Statistics Canada show most of us have easy access to a liquor store, but we could face a hike after marijuana becomes legal next week.

It all varies by region, of course. But more than 80 per cent of Canadians can find a liquor outlet within five kilometres of where they live. That jumps to 90 per cent when you expand the distance to 10 kilometres.

Compare that to Statistics Canada’s estimates for cannabis shops : After next Wednesday, only 25 per cent will have that five-kilometre access in the fourth quarter of the year, and 35 per cent for 10 kilometres.

British Columbia, for the record, is where it’s at.

“British Columbia leads the provinces and territories, with expected access at 73 per cent of its population,” the federal agency said.

“All provincial and territorial cannabis access rates are expected to increase substantially in 2019 and 2020 as additional retail outlets are opened,” it added.
