The bindi, the traditional forehead dot worn by Hindu women, is the medium that ties together the work of multidisciplinary artist Bharti Kher. Whether she’s covering large sculptural objects with them, or smaller, more intimate objects, they represent religious ritual and repetition, the feminine and appropriation through mass consumer culture. Kher’s work is on display at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Vision Exchange: Perspectives from India to Canada. The exhibition looks at the works of 20 contemporary artists from India and artists of Indian heritage living in Canada creating new perspectives and conversations about land, history and diaspora. Vision Exchange: Perspectives from India to Canada is up until Jan. 6, 2019, in Edmonton.
