Jordan Bennett's Ice Fishing, 2014–18.National Gallery of Canada

Jordan Bennett, an artist born in Stephenville Crossing (Ktawmkuk), N.L., and of Mi’kmaq descent, often looks to the natural world for inspiration. As an interdisciplinary artist, storytelling is at the heart of his practice and Bennett uses a wide a variety of mediums to get the message across. Through a focus on exploring the visual culture of the Mi’kmaq and Beothuk, Bennett’s work seeks to challenge colonial perceptions and stereotypes of Indigenous history.

Bennett is one of the five artists from across Canada shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award, a prestigious prize that recognizes and supports emerging artists. The works of the five finalists are presented in a group exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada until Feb. 14, 2019. The winner will be announced on Nov. 14.
