Ceydie in the CEO chair, 2017, inkjet print.Cynthia Johnston

Cynthia Johnston’s photographic practice exists somewhere between her studies in reportage and painting, her delicate images possessing a poetic timelessness. The titular project Ceydie, an ode to her eldest daughter, springs from the process of documenting her five children over the past 18 years. The intimate body of work looks at the ups and downs of the relationship between Johnston and Ceydie as she searches for her own voice and pushes through to womanhood. Ceydie is presented at the Ryerson Image Centre’s Student Gallery with the DocNow Festival in Toronto, until Aug. 5.
